A New Face for Peter Parker in Spider-Man Remastered

Why have they changed Peter Parker’s face in the PS5 remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man?

This morning, I woke up to some slightly bizarre news.

They’ve changed Peter Parker’s face in the upcoming remastered version of Marvel’s Spider-Man which is due out on the PS5.

Now, face changes aside, the first question that jumped to mind is — do we really need a remaster of a game which came out just 2 years ago?

I played the original PS4 version on my YouTube channel around this time last year and absolutely loved it. It’s an amazing game.

If you’re interested in checking that playthrough out by the way, here’s part 1 of the series:

Back to the subject at hand though.

I understand there’s an element of wanting to show the game off in all its glory with the new hardware the PS5 packs, but surely it’s far too soon to be releasing a remaster? Perhaps in another 2 or 3 years’ time yes, but it feels like the original version only just came out.

Anyway, you can form your own opinions on that.

Peter Parker PS4

As you can see from the above image, the original Peter Parker has a more mature look than some of the other preceding versions.

I for one really liked that. He felt like a more experienced and worn-down Peter. In the story, he’s having relationship and friendship troubles and struggling to balance being Spider-Man with normal life.

It was interesting to play as a more grown-up Peter Parker rather than just the “origins” story of Peter becoming Spider-Man and getting used to his new-found superpowers.

Peter Parker PS5

Above you can see the new face players will experience when they play Spider-Man Remastered on the PS5.

This new Peter Parker looks younger, more like he’s in his late teens to me.

In fact, in a lot of ways, Miles Morales now looks older than Peter does in-game, despite Peter starting to begin a role as a kind of mentor to Miles as the game’s story progresses.

I’ve read the reasons given for the change, but it all feels very unnecessary from my point of view.

I for one had absolutely no problem with how Peter looked in the PS4 version of the game and felt the face fit the slightly older (23 year old) character and the positions he found his life in perfectly.

Now it’s worth mentioning, I’m not angry about this change, more confused than anything else.

It doesn’t tarnish what was an incredibly enjoyable experience playing through the original version of the game.

I’m still currently playing through the post-game parts trying to get to 100% completion.

But again, I’m drawn back to the word “unnecessary” when thinking about a remaster so soon and the face change.

Who knows, perhaps one day I’ll play the remaster and love this new Peter. For now, though, I miss the old face.
